Why Do Portrait Backgrounds Look Busy Even When Shooting at a Wide Aperture?
If you have set your aperture to f/1.4 or f/1.8 and your portrait background is still readable — you can still make out branches, railings, or a crowd behind your subject — the aperture is not the problem. Wide aperture only controls how much light reaches the sensor and how thin your plane of focus is. It does not, by itself, decide how blurred your background looks. That is governed by a combination of subject-to-background distance, focal length, sensor size, and how far your subject is from the camera. A wide-open aperture on a lens positioned too close to a busy wall, or used at a short focal length, will still produce a background you can identify.
